The Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo is one of the most photographed sites in New Zealand.
Stay at Tekapo overnight in your Queenstown Motorhome Rental and it is a short drive early in the morning, for a view out over Lake Tekapo just next to the Church of the Good Shepherd.
The Sheepdog Memorial just next to The Church of the Good Shepherd stands as a memorial to the Scottish shepherds who worked on the pastoral runs in the Southern Lakes and Mackenzie Country. With their border collie sheepdogs the areas could not have been farmed successfully without them, and the statue of a collie stands there in memory of them all.
The Dark Sky Observatory is on the banks of Lake Tekapo and compliments the Mount John Observatory about half an hours drive away. Drive there easily in your campervan and see the night sky from a mountaintop viewpoint. It is spectacular. While you are there, visit Lake Alexandrina, with boating fishing and camping spots all year round.
From Lake Tekapo and The Church of the Good Shepherd it is a short drive to the Mount John Observatory round the lake. On the left and at the end of Lake Tekapo are the beginnings of The Southern Alps and Mt D’Archiac.
If you want to back track you can experience the road to Aoraki Mount Cook at the Pukaki turnoff, or drive to Lake Ohau with its fishing spots and camp site.
Further back, the Lindis Pass road winds through magnificent scenery and back to Wanaka and That Wanaka Tree.
