The Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo is one of the most photographed sites in New Zealand.
Stay at Tekapo overnight in your Queenstown Motorhome Rental and it is a short drive early in the morning for a view out over Lake Tekapo just next to the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Built and opened in 1935 The Church of the Good Shepherd was built for all and continues as a place of worship for the local residents of Lake Tekapo.
The site the Church is built on was to be left undisturbed and even the stones were left in place along the wall line of the Church as it was built. All other stones needed to complete the Church were sourced from the surrounding five miles radius, and left unchipped and in their natural condition as they were laid to complete the Church.
This has given the Church a very quiet strength and the simplicity of it reflects the essential qualities of the early settlers who managed to create a life in the harsh Mackenzie Country of The Southern Lakes of New Zealand.
On the shores of Lake Tekapo with a backdrop to the Southern Alps across the lake, the Church of the Good Shepherd is one of the best places for the early morning sunrise and the evening sunset.
The light falling on the Church and the Alps in the background has to be experienced to be believed.
Park up your Queenstown Motorhome Rental in the carpark near by and wait for the stars and The Milky Way to show themselves in the Dark Sky Area of New Zealand.
If you happen to be there, its another opportunity to photograph a special picture of the Church of the Good Shepherd and Lake Tekapo before you are off in the morning to either The Lindis Pass or Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
